Greetings and well met my wonderful witchy friends to the world of magick and to my own cosy little Mystic Corner! For those of you who are new to my site, my name is Naia Moonbrook and I have spent the past several years honing my own unique blend of witchcraft and helping others just like you as a seasoned spellcaster and professional witch!
Over the years as word has spread throughout my community of a young quirky witch with an eye for detail and a knack for getting the results, friends, and neighbors began to seek me out for all sorts of spiritual advice, magickal remedies, and even a couple Tarot readings and I have always done my best to help them whenever I could. After all, I have had so many unique blessings throughout the course of my life so why not take every opportunity that I can get to try and pay it forward or share the love? Besides, as a witch, I have always been a very strong believer in both karma and the Wiccan rule of three or three-fold law which clearly states that whatever energy a person puts out into the world, be it positive or negative, will be returned to them three times over. As the wonderful author, Madeline S. Bridges once wrote “Give the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you.”
So, in keeping with the theme of helping others, I thought a great topic for today’s article would be Cleansing Magick – or to put it more precisely Magickal Herbs for Cleansing.
But What Does “Cleansing” Mean?
The term “cleansing” within the magickal community, is often defined as the mindful or ritual act in which a skilled witch, shaman, druid, or spellcaster will purify their space, body, mind, or spirit and rid it of negative, stagnant, and/or malicious energies or entities. Wow, what a mouthful!
To put it far more simply, we witches (as well as many other magick practitioners) possess the innate ability and the skills to draw out the magickal properties lying otherwise dormant within certain natural herbs, woods, oils, stones, and other organic materials. During cleansing rituals, we use these hidden magickal traits to enhance our spellwork and to rid a specific space or individual of any and all negative or harmful energies that may be around or inside them.
For the skilled witch, the act of cleansing could be as simple as routinely washing away the weight of worries and stress from the day with a wonderful bubble bath and some herbal tea, or it could be something far more serious such as banishing evil spirits from a friend or neighbor’s home before clearing away any lingering anger or dangerous energy with a magickal wash and some trusty sage. The possibilities are endless! There are so many different ways to use cleansing magick – it can be a little overwhelming – yet in the end, one fact still remains – that any caster worth her [witch’s salt] will learn the art of cleansing by heart!
Magickal Herbs for Cleansing:
One of a witch’s greatest allies when crafting home remedies and custom cleansings is herbology. Herbology is the study of both magickal and mundane (non-magick) plants and fungi as well as their possible applications within the magickal and mundane world. Whether you are in need of a simple bundle of white or blue sage for smudging a home or just a dram of rosemary and mint tea to clear away all those “mental cobwebs”, Herbology and Earth Magick has got you covered! And so, without further ado, here is a list of my absolute favourite go-to magickal herbs for all your cleansing needs:
🌿 Cedar – Burn Cedar for Decluttering and Untangling Energy. Great to use after a good spring cleaning or when bringing old/antique items into your home to clear away any lingering foreign energies.
🌿 Cypress – Burn Cypress to clear away harmful entities, destructive thoughts, or sour moods and to create a grounded positive environment ideal for dreamwork, meditation, and wisdom seeking.
🌿 Goldenrod – Burn to infuse a space with prosperous vibrations and positive energy.
🌿 Juniper – Burn Juniper or use it in a room mist or floor wash to give your home a more comfortable and positive energy. Juniper’s soothing scent is great for clearing away any mental fogginess and uplifting your mood.
🌿 Lavender – Lavender is an incredibly versatile plant that can be used in a multitude of magickal ways! It has a gentle floral scent that can soothe the soul and cleanse all negativity. Use in baths, room mists, mop wash, or tea to induce a relaxed and tranquil state of mind and dispel worries or negativity.
🌿 Mullen – Used throughout multiple folk medicine practices, mullen can be burned as an incense and inhaled to calm disturbed airways and soothe asthmatic inflammation. (Always consult your physician before taking any herbal remedies!) Mullen incense can also be used to combat curses or hexes and to clear away the destructive energies left behind after a curse is broken.
🌿 Rosemary – Burn to create a “fresh start” in life or to symbolically finalize a big life change such as the breaking of a bad habit, embarking on a new path, or opening yourself up to more creativity and opportunities. As a bonus, plant rosemary by your front door to ward off evil spirits and ill-wishers.
🌿 Thyme – Thyme has its roots in ancient Greece where the word thyme stems from the Greek word meaning to “fumigate” and it was used throughout many of their sacred rites to instill strength and courage while dispelling grief, hopelessness, and harmful spirits. Today, thyme is used by many witches to enhance their cleansing and protection spells by conjuring positivity and banishing darkness.
🌿 Lemon Balm – Burn dried lemon balm or lemon grass to rid your home of unwanted or stagnant energy and to brighten up any room! Great for not only clearing away the bad but also for drawing in positivity, prosperity, confidence, and loving energy.
🌿 Frankincense & Myrrh – Both Frankincense and Myrrh are resins and are best purchased in incense form. The smoke of burning Frankincense is thought to carrying wishes or prayers to the heavens and to banish negative spirits. On the other hand, Myrrh is often used in meditation spaces to still the busy mind and relax the body bringing in positive vibes and energy.
🌿 Palo Santo – Palo Santo is the wood of a sacred tree found typically along the coast of South America. It burns rather slowly and produces a sweet woodsy scent that is warm and inviting. Burn Palo Santo to clear away all negative energy and to invite good spirits and prosperity into your home.
🌿 Sage – Sage, often seen in the magickal community as the king of kings when it comes to cleansing, Sage is burned in bundles sometimes referred to as smudging sticks in order to encapsulate and capture any negative vibes or particles within its sacred smoke and carry them out and far away and to set the stage for fresher, brighter, more positive energy to enter. If you find that you are smoke intolerant or you have small children or animals in your home, try boiling sage leaves in a pot of freshwater on the stove instead and allowing the steam to waft throughout your house (or pour the cooled liquid into a spray bottle to create your own diy cleansing room spray).
🌿 Mint – Mint is another wonderful plant that possesses all sorts of spectacular health benefits and magickal properties. I absolutely adore using mint in my personal practice whether it be through kitchen witchery, protection magick, or in cleansings! Drink mint infused tea to lighten the spirit, clear away mental clutter, and soothe anxiety. Add mint to your mop water, windowsills, and thresholds to erect a protective barrier of love and luck while washing away any disruptive energies.
🌿 Mugwort – Burn mugwort in your bedroom or meditation space to enhance pleasant dreams, focus meditation, inspire lucid dreaming, and banish nightmares.
🌿 Yerba Santa – For Good Vibes, Self Love, and Healing Energy. Traditionally burned to help heal broken hearts.
🌿 Sandalwood – Burn in raw or incense form to clear away unwanted emotions and replace them with a calm more grounding energy.
🌿 Stinging Nettle – Stinging Nettle or Nettle is a beautiful plant that consists of heart-shaped leaves, yellow or pink flowers, and stems that are covered in tiny stiff hairs that are sharp to the touch and release stinging chemicals when disturbed. Stinging Nettle has been used for centuries as an herbal medicine by magickal and mundane traditions the world over! Drink Nettle Tea to aid in the cleansing of the body and expelling of negative energies/entities. Also useful for combating urinary tract infections, lowering blood sugar, and soothing arthritis pain. (Always consult your physician before taking any herbal remedies!)
🌿 Burdock Root – Burdock is a member of the thistle family and can be identified in the wild by its extremely large, flat leaves and purple flowers with burrs. Burdock Root is edible and has a very earthy, slightly bitter taste (think lotus root or turnips). Burdock Root and Leaves have powerful cleansing and protective properties. Steep Burdock leaves and root in hot water along with some rosemary, mint, dandelions, and lemon balm to create your very own magickal mop wash great for any home cleansing or protection spell.
🌿 Dandelion – Adorn your home with bouquets of dandelions to dispel dark thoughts and negative spiritual energies. Use dandelion stems, leaves, and blossoms in your mop water during spring cleaning to wash away negativity and seal in their sunny positive energy. Drink dandelion infused tea for a refreshing and uplifting summer treat! (Always consult your physician before taking any herbal remedies!)
🌿 Milk Thistle – Milk Thistle is a spiny stemmed plant with wide leaves that secretes a milky fluid when crushed. You can take milk thistle in capsule or tincture form and you might even be able to find it as an extract. Used to cleanse the body – particularly the liver – of toxins and to aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. (Always consult your physician before taking any herbal remedies!)
